Here’s a look at the process of designing my second mermaid wooden doll 🩷

I start by sourcing a blank wooden doll from Ukraine. Once I have the base shape, I bring it into Photoshop to plan out the design, thinking through what I can physically build onto the doll and how I want it to be painted.

For this collection, I decided to focus on mermaids (inspired by Mary Blair). After finalizing the concept, the wooden “buns” (door nubs) and elements are attached according to my designs, and then the painting begins.

This project blends digital planning with hands-on craftsmanship, which has been a really fun challenge. Stay tuned for four more designs in this series!

Here’s a look at the process of designing my second mermaid wooden doll 🩷

I’m beyond thrilled that you’ll all get to meet Akiko!
She was my very first design as we dove into Season 2, and it was an absolute delight bringing her to life. From her glittering crystal tail ✨ to weaving elements of Japanese culture into her outfit, every detail was such a treat. And of course, her best fin is an axolotl 🦎 so I just had to sneak some of that design magic into her headpiece! 🪸💫

The wooden ladies have taken the plunge and gone full mermaid! 💜💚💛🩷

I had such a blast creating my first set of wooden ladies that I just had to make some new ones! this time with a mermaid twist and a splash of fun 💦

These mermaids are 9.8 × 1.6 inches, way bigger than the originals, and I loved experimenting with a fresh design inspired by Mary Blair's iconic mermaid concepts for Peter Pan.

Can't wait to start painting and prepping them for their big debut at @animationyall this April!

When the class moms found out about my artistic side, I was asked to help with a fun class project. Painting a holiday gift for my daughter’s 1st-grade teacher together was really special, and seeing her proudly show off the parts she painted made it a moment I won’t forget.

Inside the ornament, the class moms tucked in all the kids’ names along with a little glittery glitz, and I painted the outside with gouache on a clear plastic ball. 🎨✨

It’s my first time painting on plastic. Any tips out there about sealing it so the paint is protected? Any advice would be most appreciated.

Ok, can we talk about this? Does anyone recall or know who Princess Mombi is? She's the beautiful sorceress villain from the 1985 Disney movie Return to Oz who takes over the Emerald City.

What makes Princess Mombi so unique are her multiple enchanted heads she can switch based on her mood. When Dorothy appears, Princess Mombi locks her up in her tower intending to add her head to her collection once Dorothy comes of age.

Watching that scene as a child both terrified and mesmerized me. The beauty and sound of everything had me hooked despite the fear. If you haven't seen Return to Oz, you need to! The mechanical wheelers were the most frightening part for me. 😬 let me know if you remember this movie?
